The convert’s FAQ
How to convert to Islam?
To convert to Islam, you simply need to sincerely pronounce the shahada (testimony of faith), by saying:
“Achhadu an lâ ilâha illa Allah, wa achhadu anna Muhammad rasûl Allah”
(I testify that there is no deity but God and that Muhammad is His messenger)
You can say it alone or in the presence of witnesses (not mandatory, but recommended for practical reasons). No documents, administrative formalities, or mandatory mosque visits are required. It is a spiritual act between you and God. However, going to the mosque can be helpful to meet other Muslims, receive support, and get a certificate of conversion (often requested for official procedures, Muslim marriage, etc.).

Do I have to take an Arabic name after my conversion?
No, it is not obligatory. You can keep your birth name unless it has a meaning contrary to Islam (for example: a name that means “worshiper of another god” or has an obscene meaning). If you choose a Muslim name, it is out of preference or attachment, not obligation.

What should I do if my family is against my conversion?
Be kind and patient. The Qur’an advises respecting your parents even if they are non-Muslims, as long as they do not force you to renounce your faith:
“And if they try to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness.” (Qur’an, 31:15)
Surround yourself with brothers and sisters in faith to keep the strength to continue. You are not alone.
Do I have to change my lifestyle overnight?
No, it’s not an immediate requirement. Islam encourages you to draw closer to Allah gradually, with sincerity and patience. Some behaviors (alcohol, forbidden relationships, music, etc.) should be avoided, but all changes can take time.
It’s best to start with faith and prayer, and let God purify your heart over time.

Am I allowed to associate with non-Muslims after my conversion?
Yes, Islam does not forbid associating with non-Muslims, especially your family, colleagues, and friends. You just need to preserve your faith and conduct. The goal is to be a positive example for those around you.

Do I have to get circumcised?
Circumcision is a highly recommended practice (sunnah mu’akkadah) for men, but it is not obligatory according to the majority of scholars regarding adult converts.
It is part of the fitrah (pure nature), but its absence does not affect your faith or prayer.
